Ashampoo Snap 6 provides everything you need to capture information, apply annotations and effects to illustrate your point and publish the results.

Capture
Ashampoo Snap 6 provides multiple capture modes to cover all possible eventualities. Besides optional keyboard shortcuts to trigger the different modes, there is no fiddling with your keyboard required as most modes simply involve mouse positioning and clicking to begin/end the capturing process.

Fixed Size Region	Select any application window, including scrolling windows, and have Ashampoo Snap 6 capture their entire contents to image files. You may also capture your entire desktop or application menus. Additionally, Ashampoo Snap 6 provides presets for common window sizes.
Free Size Region	Either use a freely resizable rectangle shape or draw your own shape to capture any region of your screen.
Timer	Some scenarios require interval capturing, e.g. to record a step-by-step process for a tutorial project. In this mode, Ashampoo Snap 6 either creates a single screenshot after a definable time period (10 to 30 seconds) or several at a customizable interval from “Every 5th Second” to “Every Hour”. This mode works with the desktop, application windows or a freely resizable rectangle area.
Video	Although Ashampoo Snap 6 already provides timer-based capturing at fixed intervals, some cases require higher framerates only possible through video capturing. In Ashampoo Snap 6, video and audio codec settings are customizable including framerate, format and bitrate. Sound recording is supported through any available Windows recording device. Additionally, Ashampoo Snap 6 provides settings to allow for mouse cursor effects such as glowing on mouse clicks as well as video post processing including effects such as Sepia and automatic resizing. Recording is either done on the fly for faster machines or with disk caching for slower machines. This mode works with the desktop, application windows, freely resizable and fixed-size rectangle areas as well as any available webcam.

Edit
Once your screenshot(s) have been created it is time to start editing. You don’t need extra image editing software, Ashampoo Snap 6 supports you with a range of built-in functions to annotate, illustrate and process your screenshots to help you communicate your thoughts and ideas.

Publish

It has a strong track record for new features that get its users clamouring to upgrade. For CS6, that feature is a new set of blur tools that mimic depth-of-field effects. Blur is applied dynamically across the image, so the midpoint between sharp and a 100-pixel blur is a 50-pixel blur. This is far more convincing than simply fading between blurred and sharp versions of an image, as most depth-of-field effects (including Premiere Elements’) do.

Tilt-Shift creates a band of sharp focus with gradually increasing blur either side, while Iris Blur creates an ellipse of focus. Field Blur is the most flexible: isolated points are positioned freely on the image, each with its own blur amount, and the software interpolates between them. Intuitive controls appear directly on the image, and with quickly updating previews, designing complex blur effects is extremely intuitive.
The three blur types can be combined and previewed together before you commit to them, but this can get unwieldy. Applying two Iris Blurs, for instance, creates two sharp circles on the image. However, when combining a Tilt-Shift and Iris Blur, both effects work independently so blur values are compounded, potentially leaving nothing sharp.

There are options to turn highlights into the distinctive circular blobs of an out-of-focus lens. Sadly, though, these effects lack the sophistication of the Lens Blur effect introduced in Photoshop CS3, which lets the user specify the number and shape of aperture blades in the virtual lens, giving superb control over the appearance of the blur, known as bokeh. Lens Blur is still available, but it's not as easy to use as the new Blur tools.
Using the selection tools before applying blur makes it easy to keep parts of the image sharp – useful for creating a blurred background that wraps tightly around a subject. This could easily have led to opacity problems or bleeding of colours along the boundary of the selection, but the effect is clever enough to avoid both problems. This is the kind of attention to detail we expect from Photoshop. These new blur effects are likely to see lots of use, not just for photo processing but also as more abstract effects in graphic design projects.

Smooth moves
Content-Aware Fill made its debut in Photoshop CS5, automatically grafting parts of the image to cover unwanted items. You now have more control over this thanks to the Patch Tool, which lets the user specify the source area for the graft. Content-Aware Move is yet another spin on the same idea, transplanting a selection from one area to another and blending both the original and new positions. There's also an Extend mode for stretching objects. As with the other Content-Aware tools, the results are hit-and-miss, but in many instances they get close to usable results, cutting down on the amount of manual tweaking involved. Content-Aware Move rarely gave tidy results but it’s useful for quickly trying out compositional ideas.

Adaptive Wide Angle attempts to restore straight lines in wide-angle, fish-eye and panoramic photos
Adobe Camera Raw 7 (ACR7) is Photoshop’s updated raw-processing module, and inherits new features from Lightroom 4’s Develop module. This includes improved exposure controls with separate sliders for Highlights, Shadows, Whites and Blacks, plus the ability to adjust white balance and noise reduction in limited parts of the image. It’s a seriously powerful set of tools but it fits better within Lightroom’s more managed, entirely non-destructive workflow.
There’s a long list of smaller improvements. The natural media brushes now include charcoal with an erodible point, so strokes become progressively thicker until the user clicks Sharpen Tip. Layers can be filtered by type, making it easier to manage complex graphic design jobs. The Duplicate Layer command now has a keyboard shortcut. Vector objects can have solid or dotted outlines and gradient or textured fills. An Aligned Rendering option helps to produce crisper vector shapes by ensuring that horizontal and vertical lines are aligned to the pixel grid to avoid anti-aliasing. The Crop tool has been revamped, with an option to merely hide rather than delete cropped pixels. As such, crops are now non-destructive, but only when saved as PSD files and opened in Photoshop CS6. 

 There’s a new panel for adding adjustment layers, while their settings appear in a new Properties panel. Clicking Auto in the Curves and Levels adjustment layers gives more sophisticated results than before. There’s a new Adjustment layer type, too: Color Lookup applies various film-like effects such as Bleach Bypass, Moonlight and Horror Blue. The Select by Color Range tool can now zone in skin tones and benefits from face detection. It sometimes worked superbly but it seems to be strangely unaware that faces tend not to have big holes in them.
Text formatting can be saved as Character and Paragraph Styles for reuse elsewhere. The system for defining, applying and altering styles is a little clumsy, though. There's no central repository for custom Styles – instead, they must be loaded manually from another PSD file, and can’t be imported from InDesign.

Engine upgrades
Photoshop CS6 also has an updated graphics engine, which draws on the graphics processor via OpenCL to speed up screen redraws. The benefits were clear in the new blur effects and the updated Crop tool. It also made a big difference in the Liquify tool, which now provides incredibly responsive redraws for its freeform distortion brushes. Photoshop now saves in the background so there’s no need to wait while large files are saved, and it automatically backs up every five to 60 minutes depending on your preference.

The final rabbit in Adobe's hat is greatly expanded support for video. This was previously limited to Photoshop Extended and even then was pretty basic, but Photoshop CS6 is a fully fledged video editor. Its timeline can handle multiple video and audio tracks, dissolve transitions and even keyframe animation for a limited set of parameters including size, position and opacity.
Individual frames can be edited using Photoshop’s full array of destructive editing tools, while adjustment layers act as non-destructive effects, either per clip or to a sequence of clips. Their settings can’t be keyframe-animated, though. Each video track appears as a group in the Layers palette, so it’s also possible to combine clips using blend modes.

It’s still basic by normal video-editing standards. For example, there's limited control over the soundtrack and ripple editing is clumsy, often resulting in a loss of sync between tracks. However, it's well suited to SLR and CSC users who view video as an extension of their photographic work, and who don’t want to buy and learn a new editor.
It’s probably clear by now that this is a massive update. Some of the new features have impressed us more than others, but finding so many ways to improve this mature, capable editor is a huge achievement. Professional users shouldn’t hesitate to upgrade (for £191 including VAT). Home users will need all their powers of self-control to resist splashing out.
